Beyond the Byline: Northwestern journalism resident Maggie Rose Baron

An Oak Park native who has spent her whole life in the Chicago area, Daily Herald intern and Northwestern University junior Maggie Rose Baron is learning to look at the suburbs as a reporter as well as a resident.

Baron got her first taste of journalism in high school when she wrote a feature story on a cross country teammate. She picked up reporting again three years later at Northwestern, switching her major from computer science to journalism and trying her hand at sports writing for a campus publication. Through her classes, she discovered a love for reporting on local issues and local people.

When it came to her journalism residency, a program where Northwestern journalism majors work at media and marketing sites for one academic quarter, she was drawn to the Daily Herald because of its local focus, broad coverage area and the chance to expand her horizons by reporting on news.

Her favorite part of the job is learning new things and talking to interesting people, and she is excited to continue covering stories that suburbanites care about.

In her free time, Baron likes to spend time outside, playing sports and taking long walks. She also collects CDs and loves to crochet.
