Fremont Community Celebrates its Rich Diversity at Multicultural Fair

Fremont School District 79’s community came together to celebrate its rich diversity with the Fremont Family Multicultural Fair May 2 at Fremont Elementary School.

The evening’s event featured families from various nationalities providing foods and other items of cultural significance as a way to share and educate one another on their respective cultures.

Fremont Elementary School special education teacher Aileen Duffy, who helped organize the event with district multilingual teachers, said the evening’s festivities were a fun and educational experience.

“I was delighted to see all of the different cultures represented at our annual multicultural event,” Duffy said. “I tried some delicious foods that I have never had before and was able to learn more about the origins of several Fremont families. Both parents and their children were so proud to share food, clothing and other items that represent their unique culture. It was awesome to see this community share and mingle together.”

FSD79 student population consists of 12 percent individuals who are English language learners, while 43 different languages are spoken in the homes of district students.

Duffy, who lives in the district and has children who attend Fremont, was excited to incorporate her own family into the event.

“When my children heard about the upcoming multicultural event, they were ecstatic to be able to attend,” Duffy said. “Since their grandfather is from Poland, they served pierogies. They had the best time sharing their heritage, seeing their friends and trying a bunch of new foods. I was happy that they could be a part of this event to learn about other cultures, and see how diverse our community is.”
