Barrington High School building quiz bowl dynasty

Barrington High School successfully defended its title last week at the 2024 High School National Championship Tournament in Atlanta.

The quiz bowl competition featured 320 teams from 38 states, the District of Columbia, and China.

After 18 matches over 31 rounds, Barrington High’s A Team defeated St. Mark's School of Texas from Dallas by a score of 445-325 to win its second consecutive title and third championship in four years.

The team was captained by Charles Young, who was joined on the squad by Kaushik Gollamudi, Rohan Kher, and William Yao. They finished the preliminary rounds with a 10-0 record, earning them a spot in the playoffs.

The competition features teams of students putting their combined knowledge to the test by answering questions covering subjects such as science, math, history, literature, mythology, geography, social science, current events, sports and popular culture.

Barrington also sent a B team captained by Kaitlyn Leonard, who was joined by Lynda Ma, Kiran Patel and Colin Starnes.

Both teams were coached by Jeffrey Price.

Barrington players also received two individual honors: Charles Young and Rohan Kher received “All-Star” awards based on their strong performance in the preliminary rounds.

Stevenson High School also sent two teams to the tournament: Team A, consisting of Agastya Choudary, Monit Karmakar, Hari Veginati, and Jingyi Wu; and Team B featuring Jason Jacob, Spencer Manning, Ani Srinivasan, and Ethan Wang.

Team B team finished in 33rd place, while the A squad placed 65th. Both were coached by Brian Oberhauser.

Manning earned “All-Star” honors, while Karmakar earned distinction as a Sophomore Rising Star, and Srinivasan was named a Freshman Rising Star.

Fremd High School in Palatine also entered three teams.

Team A, which finished 49th, was captained by Pranav Aiyar, who was joined by Dwij Bhatt, Omkar Marathe and Anvith Vanukuri.

Team B placed 33rd and was captained by Pranaav Senthilkumar, who was joined by Daoud Hussain, Sai Mihir Kovour, Steven Long and Vedanth Srihari.

The C team, which finished 167th, was captained by Eli Musicar, who was joined by Adrian Berkmans, Satya Bheemarasetti, Ashish Kashyap and Ziyan Khan.

The teams were coached by Lexi Frieman and John Snyder.
