St. Charles Public Library hosts ‘Minerals, Fossils & Crystals’ June 11

Join geologist and paleontologist Jason Rehorst on Tuesday, June 11, at the St. Charles Public Library to learn about the science of geology and the hobby of rock collecting.

By combining knowledge of geology with the practical aspects of rock collecting, you can deepen your appreciation for Earth's natural history and build an impressive collection of specimens.

During the program, attendees will learn the difference between geology and paleontology, a mineral and a fossil. How to build and maintain a rock collection, the geological history of the upper Midwest, and what fossils can be found here. Attendees will be able to examine and handle various fossils and minerals.

The program will be 7 to 8 p.m. in the Huntley Room of the library, 1 S. Sixth Ave.

During the months of June and July, the Virtual Museum of Geology’s traveling display will be hosted at the library in the lobby display cases.

The display consists of a selection of geological specimens representing the wonders of the natural world and gives viewers a further understanding of mineral varieties and the creation of fossils.

It will highlight various minerals of differing colors, shapes, crystal forms, sizes, and rarity, as well as fossils from the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic Eras.

To register for the program, call (630) 584-0076 or visit scpld.libnet.info/event/10224403.
