Elgin Area Chamber awards five student scholarships

The Elgin Area Chamber and its economic development program, Elgin Development Group, granted five $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors pursuing further education.

The chamber believes that leadership, community service, and the pursuit of higher education should be appropriately recognized and rewarded with this new scholarship program.

“It was difficult to choose only five candidates among the many deserving students that have worked hard to achieve stellar school records and have invested themselves in the community through volunteerism,” said Carol Gieske, president and CEO of the Elgin Area Chamber.

Available to high school seniors that reside in Elgin or South Elgin, the scholarship criteria were based on the applicant’s scholastic achievement, interest in continuing education and career goals, participation, and leadership in school and community activities.

“We are honored to play a small part in helping these five talented students move forward in their lives through these scholarships,” said Tony Lucenko, Elgin Development Group director. “They exemplify excellence and have a bright future ahead of them.”

The five scholarships were awarded to Lucio Avila (Elgin High School); Eirini Karavasis (Burlington Central High School); Robyn Kopenny (Elgin High School); Lucia Lopez-Magallanes (Burlington Central High School); and Ethan Zagore (South Elgin High School).

Awards were recently presented to the students at the chamber office.
