Drawing the Iris: 5-8 p.m., Monday, June 17, at Cantigny Park, 1S151 Winfield Road, Wheaton. Immersive botanical art class will delve into the allure of irises, a favorite subject of renowned artists like Monet and Van Gogh. Using watercolor pencils and guided by artist Denise Laurin, participants will craft a stunning iris masterpiece to proudly display at home. Weather permitting, guests will have the opportunity to stroll the Cantigny gardens for inspiration. Cost $75; includes parking and materials. Details and registration at Cantigny.org.

Water-Wise Gardening: 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at Elmhurst Public Library, 125 S. Prospect Ave., Elmhurst. Even if it's not a drought year, proper watering is very important to our gardens. Too often, our practices waste water and fail to give our plants what they need. Learn basic watering techniques, tools for watering, and how to plan a water-efficient garden. Book Talk: “Nature is Our Country Club.” 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 19, at Cantigny Park, 1s151 Winfield Road, Wheaton. Local author, artist and naturalist Christopher Cudworth will discuss his latest book, “Nature is Our Country Club.” He advocates for responsible environmental practices by golf courses and more generally for the positive effects of being outdoors in nature. The presentation is free and so is parking for those who register in advance. A casual bird/garden walk will precede the main event. Details at Cantigny.org.

What First-Time Buyers Need to Know: 7 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at Elk Grove Village Public Library, 1001 Wellington Ave., Elk Grove Village. Tracy Sorge from Wintrust Mortgage and Jim Abbott from Baird Warner will provide a road map to homeownership in today’s market. Learn about prequalification, checking your credit, and various grant programs available to first-time homebuyers. Decide your top “must-haves” when searching for a home, and understand the buying process after you find “the one.” Tracy will also share the do's and don'ts of preparing for homeownership. Wheaton Garden Club, Pollinator Garden Open House: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, June 22, at Seven Gables Park, 1750 S. Naperville Road, Wheaton. The garden is in the circle drive close to the playground, while educational displays will be in the pavilion. The open house celebrates Pollinator Week, June 17-23. Arlington Heights Garden Club Garden Walk & Unique Boutique: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, June 23, starting at the Arlington Heights Historical Museum grounds, 110 W. Freemont St. Six gardens will be featured. Advance tickets are $15 online or in person at the Arlington Heights Farmers Market Saturday morning at Freemont and Vail streets, or at Village Bank, Northwest Highway branch or the branch at Rand Road and Arlington Heights Road. Tickets are $20 on the day of the walk. Lombard Garden Club, “Using Heat to Defeat Pests”: 6:30 p.m. Monday, June 24, Helen Plum Library, 411 S. Main St., Lombard. Horticulturist Sharon Yiesla will discuss how the accumulation of heat influences plants and insects, and how to use that information to limit pest damage to plants. Public is welcome; no charge. Private Garden Tour: John Richter has opened his private garden in Warrenville to share the beauty of his various grafted trees and variegated bushes, thousands of day lilies from 10 different hybridizers, and over 750 different varieties of hostas, as well as numerous beautiful sculptures.
