Celebrating Flag Day: Aurora Boy Scouts post flags in subscribers' yards

As part of its sixth annual fundraiser, Blackhawk Boy Scouts of America Troop 11 in Aurora is posting a U.S. flag in subscribers' yards on national holidays — Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Labor Day.

Uniformed Scouts of Troop 11, based at Wesley United Methodist Church in Aurora, are respectfully posting a flag in a subscriber's yard in the morning and then retrieving it in the evening.

The project covers costs for maintaining troop equipment, makes summer camp affordable for all and funds recognition for scouts’ accomplishments.

Troop 11's flag-posting service area is west Aurora and North Aurora west of Fox River. In lieu of a yard posting, a subscriber can have a flag posted at the Aurora Police station to honor those who served, first responders, or a loved one.

Based at Wesley United Methodist Church in Aurora, Blackhawk Troop 11 is chartered by Roosevelt-Aurora American Legion Post 84. Since its founding in 1916, Troop 11 has guided over 200 young men on their journey to earn the rank of Eagle.

Troop 11 is a “boy-run” troop, focusing on developing leadership by giving scouts responsibility for managing their activities. The scouting program is designed for youth from 11 to 17 years old or at least 10 years old and have completed the fifth grade or have earned the Cub Scout Arrow of Light Award.

Scouts experience a vigorous outdoor program and peer group leadership with the counsel of an adult Scoutmaster to achieve the BSA's objectives of developing character, citizenship, and personal fitness. Camping, fun with friends — and more.

Troop 11 meets on Monday evenings at 7 p.m. at Wesley United Methodist Church, 14 N. May St. in Aurora.
