Skeletal remains found near Zion-area state park

Investigators are working to determine details involving skeletal remains found Friday in a wooded area near the entrance of Adeline Jay Geo-Karis Illinois Beach State Park near Zion, authorities said.

Zion police found the remains after receiving an anonymous tip, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Police contacted county authorities because the remains are in the jurisdiction of the sheriff’s office, according to a news release.

Sheriff’s deputies and detectives processed the scene for evidence and diagraming and the Lake County Coroner’s Office took possession of the remains, according to the sheriff’s office.

How long the remains had been there, the identity, cause and manner of death were unknown, authorities said.

The sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division is investigating.
