Police: Man shot by teen Sunday in Elgin has died

A 16-year-old boy is facing multiple felony weapons charges stemming from a shooting late Sunday in Elgin that left a man dead.

Police were dispatched to the 600 block of Villa Street just after 11:30 p.m. for reports of a shooting.

A man with gunshot wounds was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment of his wounds. Late Wednesday, Elgin police confirmed the victim had died.

A Cook County medical examiner’s report also issued Wednesday evening indicates 24-year-old Elgin resident Kevin Ambriz died Tuesday afternoon at Loyola Medical Center in Maywood. It lists the 600 block of Villa Street as the location where he suffered his fatal injuries. An autopsy is slated for Thursday.

Investigators were able to determine the victim and the teenager were fighting prior to the shooting. Police said the man displayed a knife during the fight and the boy ultimately discharged a firearm, striking the man.

The boy was taken into custody Tuesday. He is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and three counts of unlawful use of a weapon.

The boy remains in custody at the Juvenile Justice Center in St. Charles.

There is no word yet if additional charges will be pursued in the case.
