Mundelein launching new mass notification service for emergencies

Mundelein is launching a new mass notification service for emergencies, traffic updates, bad weather and other important communications.

Less-pressing announcements about village board and commission meetings, special events and volunteer opportunities will go out, too.

Produced by Kansas-based CivicPlus, the CivicReady system allows subscribers to receive alerts via automated phone calls, text messages or email — or more than one of those options, if they prefer.

People who want to receive alerts must sign up, even if they subscribed to Mundelein’s previous notification service.

To register, visit mundelein.org and click on the pop-up screen on the main page. After signing up, participants must click on the link provided in an email from alerts@civicready.com to activate the registration.

Instructions will be provided on the signup page, too.

Subscribers can specify what types of messages they want to receive and choose a preferred language for the messages.

Subscribers don’t need to be Mundelein residents. People who work in the village or own businesses in town can participate, too, as can anyone who wants to be updated about life in town.

The CivicReady system cost the village about $6,584, said Jennifer Marshall, executive assistant to Village Administrator Eric Guenther. Deer Park and Deerfield are among the other suburbs that use the CivicReady system, Marshall said.

Mundelein’s prior emergency notification system was produced by a Connecticut company called Finalsite. The village now uses CivicPlus for several services, including its website and meeting agendas.

Using one company’s software for all the services will save Mundelein money, Marshall said.
