Schaumburg, insurance company to pay $275,000 to woman who fell on train platform in 2020

The village of Schaumburg and its insurance company have approved a settlement payment of $275,000 to a woman injured by a slip and fall on the village’s portion of the Metra train station platform on Oct. 9, 2020.

Village Attorney Lance Malina said Schaumburg has $111,000 left on its deductible and will pay only that amount while the insurance company will pick up the balance.

The insurance company recommended approval of the settlement, he added.

The woman suffered a broken wrist, injured her shoulder and suffered from other complications from the fall, which the condition of the platform was alleged to have caused, Malina said. She required surgery and the use of pain medication.

Schaumburg and Metra were sued in 2021, but the village was determined to bear 100% of the liability because of where on the property the fall occurred, Malina said.

Village trustees voted to approve the settlement Tuesday, following an explanation and discussion in closed session.
