Events and opportunities are on the horizon in Vernon Township

Mark your calendars. Vernon Township, 3050 N. Main St., in Buffalo Grove, has planned numerous community events and outreach programs to benefit our residents this summer. Please find details below:

Independence Day Parade on Thursday, July 4: Vernon Township Food Pantry volunteers will proudly march in Lincolnshire’s annual Independence Day Parade starting at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 4, from the corner of Lincolnshire Drive and Londonderry Lane. The marchers will raise awareness for the pantry and collect donations to help restock its shelves. Blood Drive on Thursday, July 11: Vernon Township will partner with State Rep. Daniel Didech and the American Red Cross for its second community blood drive of the year. The blood drive will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, at the township’s Community Service Building, 2900 N. Main St., in Buffalo Grove. Donations can save lives. Unplug Illinois Day Concert at the Park Saturday, July 13: Join the township for an electrifying experience on Unplug Illinois Day, which is at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 13. Enjoy a free outdoor concert by the Falconaires Orchestra at Peterson Park, 16652 N. Buffalo Grove Road, in Vernon Hills. From classical big band music to contemporary hits, their enchanting melodies will captivate people of all ages. Bring family, friends, and a picnic, and soak up the sounds of summer at this unforgettable event to ring in the summer season.

Free Shredding Event Saturday, July 13: The Vernon Township Highway Department is hosting a free shredding event from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 13, at Vernon Township, 3050 N. Main St., in Buffalo Grove. Residents can bring paper items to be shredded, such as canceled or unused checks, old insurance policies, bills, medical records and invoices. Please note: magazines, newspapers, manila folders, and binders will not be accepted. Each resident is limited to three medium-sized boxes or bags of paper items. Don't miss this chance to securely dispose of any sensitive documents.

Metra Parking Permit for Stevenson High School Go on Sale Monday, July 15: Stevenson students can purchase parking at the Prairie View Train Station due to an agreement with Metra. Parking is available exclusively in the East Parking Lot off Prairie Road. Parking is offered for the entire school year, for half the year (August-December and/or January-May), and through monthly permits. The purchase of a half-year permit includes one free month of parking, and the purchase of a full year permit includes two free months of parking. Family Movie Night on Friday, Aug. 2: Save the date. Vernon Township’s annual Movie Night will take place on from 8-10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, at Peterson Park, featuring a free showing of Disney’s “Moana.” Bring picnic blankets or lawn chairs for seating in front of the pool building. Those who attend can also enjoy discounted pool entrance from 5-8 p.m. and a late-open concession stand offering popcorn, drinks, slushies, candy and other treats.
