Project failed to make roadway safer

After years of neglect and complaints, White Pine Rd. in Buffalo Grove has finally been redone. But no sooner was the paving completed June 11 when three cars traveling in excess of 45 mph sped by my wife at 10 p.m. when she was walking our dog.

Despite numerous requests for stop signs, speed humps or other traffic control, none were included in the project. So speeding continues on the white Pine Speedway. It's scary when drivers come off the curve at Bernard.

In addition to dog walkers, there are many children, bike riders, seniors and disabled persons who need more time to cross the street. The project added two places to cross White Pine, but eliminated the existing crossings from the east side to the west. We walk our dog along various routes throughout the neighborhood and, at least before, you could cross to a driveway and not walk on someone's parkway. Now we have to walk on the parkways to cross at corner crossings that were eliminated.

Supposedly crossings should only be located at four-way intersections, but there are no corners on the west side of White Pine. Do engineers and village trustees even live in the neighborhood? In spite of the village's “safety initiatives,” White Pine is no safer now than before the project. Either we have to walk in the dangerous street or on the new extended “parkways” where corner crossings used to be.

These parkways are filled with weeds. Even the homes with well-kept and virtually weed-free lawns have areas of their parkways covered with weeds that grow bigger and taller every day.
