Driver gets 6 months in jail for fatal DUI crash in Bensenville

A Chicago man who admitted to driving drunk and causing a crash that killed a Lombard woman has been sentenced to six months in jail.

Armando Salkic, of the 4900 block of North Nagle Avenue, also will spend four years on probation, DuPage County Judge Mia McPherson ruled last week.

Prosecutors: Driver in fatal Bensenville crash was intoxicated

Salkic, 23, pleaded guilty in February to one count of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol ‒ causing death. Prosecutors dropped a charge of reckless homicide as part of his plea agreement.

Authorities say Salkic was driving a vehicle that ran a red light at York and Irving Park roads in Bensenville about 3:35 a.m. June 2, 2023, and collided with an SUV. The crash killed the SUV’s driver, 58-year-old Diane Wokurka, 58.

Salkic’s blood alcohol content was .194 — more than twice the legal threshold for driving — about 2⅟₂ hours after the crash, authorities said.

Once released from jail, Salkic will have to wear a transdermal alcohol monitor for one year. He also must perform 480 hours of community service with an organization that helps families affected by drunken driving, according to court records, and participate in a victim impact panel.
