Gurnee nurse receives regional honor for providing unparalleled care
Kate Baehman a nurse at BrightStar Care of Gurnee, has been selected for the Regional Midwest Nurse of the Year from her employer, BrightStar Care. The parent of one of Baehman’s clients nominated her for this award, recognizing her exceptional dedication, organization, and commitment to going above and beyond in her care.
Baehman began working with her client, John, as a new graduate and quickly adapted to his routine and daily activities. John is a quadriplegic with limited use of his arms and hands. He uses a ventilator for 16 hours a day and has a trach and a G-tube for feeding. He also relies on orthotics for support of his trunk, body, ankles, feet, wrists and hands. After learning about John’s care needs, Baehman enrolled in a weeklong out-of-town course to gain more knowledge about his specific care requirements. Through her dedicated care, Baehman enables John to live beyond his medical ailments, leading a normal and enjoyable life filled with friends, family and games.
In addition to assisting John with his daily exercises, Baehman helps him use his computer for texting friends and family, loading games and activities, solving wooden puzzles and painting birdhouses. She also frequently accompanies him to glass classes, where he engages socially and helps create fused glass items. With Baehman’s support, John has been able to join his family on trips away from home, something that was previously not possible. Notably, John had the honor of flying to Maine to be the ring bearer at his sister’s wedding and attending a family reunion in Minnesota.
Baehman was honored as a regional winner during a surprise ceremony at the BrightStar Care of Gurnee office on July 22. In the fall BrightStar Care will announce its national Nurse and Caregiver of the Year award winners at its annual conference.
