Dining out: Portillo’s new chocolate cake cookie, Wonderverse’s 5-pound burger
So you’re telling me Portillo’s is taking their delicious chocolate cake, and with the help of famed New York dessert shop Milk Bar, turning it into a cookie? I’m in. We can head there after downing a 5-pound burger at Wonderverse and maybe picking up some pumpkin spice chicken n’ waffles from The Budlong. Then it’s either a trip to the gym or Duck Donuts …
C is for (chocolate cake) cookie
For a hot dog and beef restaurant, Portillo’s makes awesome chocolate cake. Now they’re teaming up with Milk Bar for a limited-edition chocolate cake cookie.
The iconic New York bakery (and soon to be Chicago bakery with a location coming to Fulton Market) and Portillo’s promise a “rich and fudgey-licious soft baked cookie combining the flavors of Portillo’s moist chocolate cake with swirls, pops and chunks of Portillo’s iconic fudge frosting, all baked into the perfect Milk Bar chocolate cookie.”
The collab cookies, which are individually wrapped and available inside all Portillo’s restaurants with dining rooms via the grab-and-go display, dropped Tuesday. A six-count cookie tin will be available for nationwide shipping at MilkBarStore.com, while supplies last.
Breakfast with the Bears
A London game for the Bears and Jaguars Sunday means an early start here. Broken Oar in Port Barrington is hosting a Bears Breakfast Bash so you can enjoy kickoff with some kegs and eggs. Gates open at 8 a.m. for their breakfast buffet and bloody Mary bar. They’ll also have $5 mimosas, $20 domestic and $25 aluminum buckets of beer. Kickoff is at 8:30 a.m. Hang around after the game for Jimmy Nick & Don’t Tell Mama, who take the stage at 2 p.m.
Now that’s a burger!
You’re going to need to bring a friend or two for these new hefty menu offerings (or maybe not, we don’t judge). Wonderverse in Oak Brook is celebrating football game days with a special menu packed with oversize, shareable options like a 5-pound(!) burger served on a brioche bun. Add a stack of Barbacoa Fuego Fries and a massive 3.5-pound, 30-piece chicken wing platter while you watch the game on their equally massive screens.
The menu is available every Monday and Thursday night, as well as all day Sunday. Kids get three hours of arcade play with every $30 spent on food or beverages, so you’ll be free to cheer on your team and take down that food mountain on your table.
Wonderverse also has a pair of in-person events by Chicago sports radio station 670 The Score on Nov. 3 and 17 when they’ll do live pre- and postgame shows as the Bears take on the Cardinals and Packers, respectively.
Pumpkin spice is everywhere
In a world where you can find pumpkin spice Oreos, Frosted Flakes and even deodorant, pumpkin spice chicken n’ waffles shouldn’t be surprising.
The Budlong Southern Chicken has teamed up with Chicago-based waffle brand Evergreen to create a limited-time dish that consists of two hot-sauced chicken tenders and two pumpkin spice pie waffles with a honey drizzle on top.
The pumpkin spice chicken n’ waffles, which go for $8.99, are available until the end of November, making them perfect for celebrating National Chicken & Waffle day on Oct. 20. You can find Budlong in the Oakbrook Center mall.
Fright bite
Duck Donuts is unleashing its annual Spooky Box, a collection of 12 Halloween-themed doughnuts. The limited-edition packaging for the dozen and half-dozen Spooky Boxes feature a fanged, cape-wearing vampire duck of the brand’s mascot, Ollie, and can be filled with flavors such as Spiderweb Surprise (chocolate icing with a vanilla drizzle and a spider), Fright Night (chocolate icing with orange buttercream) and So Mummy (vanilla icing with shredded coconut and a hot fudge drizzle).
They’re available through Nov. 3 at suburban locations in Geneva, Lake Zurich, Libertyville and Naperville.
Saluti!
Antico Posto in Oak Brook is raising a toast for the restaurant’s 25th anniversary with a number of menu specials and $25 select bottles of wine Oct. 17-23.
À la carte anniversary specials include a favorite from the original menu — housemade Veal Tortellini Alla 1999 with braised mushroom, oven-dried tomato, ricotta cheese and natural jus. You can also enjoy a pizza bianco with Parmigiano-Reggiano, red onion, rosemary and pistachio.
Wine and truffles
This sounds fancy: Che Figata at CityGate Centre in Naperville will host a six-course wine dinner on Wednesday, Oct. 16, that celebrates Barolo wines and dishes featuring Italian truffles. Each of the six courses will be paired with a Barolo wine made by one of the five producers in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. The menu will feature truffles in dishes such as black bass with truffled dashi and wagyu 72-hour short rib with truffle shoyu glaze. The $150 per person experience begins at 6 p.m. Reservations can be made at OpenTable.
