PADS of Elgin names new executive director

PADS of Elgin board of directors recently appointed Katie Shaw Thompson as the organization’s new executive director.

Thompson brings over a decade of leadership experience in nonprofit management, community advocacy, and pastoral care, as well as a deep commitment to addressing housing insecurity and empowering vulnerable populations.

For nearly a decade, Thompson has served as pastor at Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren in Elgin, where she has led numerous initiatives addressing social justice, affordable housing, and community development. Her extensive work in the Elgin area has made her a trusted leader and collaborator among local nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and community stakeholders.

Thompson has served as a member of the PADS of Elgin Board, giving her invaluable insight into the organization’s mission and operations. She will conclude her term as a board member when she takes over as executive director in early 2025.

“I am honored to step into this role at PADS, an organization that holds such a vital place in our community,” Thompson said. “For decades, the staff, volunteers, and supporters of PADS have shown incredible dedication to those experiencing housing insecurity and by extension, the well-being of our entire community. I look forward to building on that foundation and working together to further strengthen our mission and impact.”

As executive director, Thompson plans to focus on strengthening operational systems, building relationships with community partners and donors, and exploring opportunities to expand PADS’ capacity to serve the growing needs of the housing insecure in the region.

“We are really excited to welcome Katie as our executive director. She brings a positive and vibrant personality as the face of the organization,” said Steve Kroiss, board president.

Thompson holds a Master of Divinity with a focus on peace studies from Bethany Theological Seminary and has been a driving force behind numerous community initiatives in Elgin, including affordable housing advocacy and interfaith collaborations. She is a certified Kingian Nonviolence Trainer and a sought-after speaker and leader within the nonprofit and faith-based sectors.

PADS of Elgin is a nonprofit organization dedicated to respectfully and compassionately empowering persons and families who are in need of housing to become self-sustaining by providing shelter, needed services, and professional guidance.
