Island Lake residence uninhabitable following late-night fire

A fire broke out late Friday at an Island Lake residence causing an estimated $100,000 in damage.

Wauconda Fire District firefighters responded to an 11:30 p.m. call about a fire in the 3000 block of Mallard Point. Upon arrival they found smoke coming from the garage of the two-story residence, according to a prepared statement from Fire Chief Patrick Kane.

Smoke alarms woke the residents and no one was injured, but the home is uninhabitable, authorities said. The cause of the fire was accidental.

The Island Lake Police Department and public works, Lake Zurich, Nunda, Grayslake, Cary, Barrington, Barrington Countryside and McHenry fire departments assisted the Wauconda Fire District.

In his prepared statement, Kane reminded residents to install smoke alarms and make sure they are working properly.
