Plenty of non-basketball events to see this month
Perfect swimming weather, isn’t it?
But none of that polar bear plunge stuff at Lake Michigan. We’re talking about indoor pools.
Earlier this week we looked at several upcoming high school basketball events to ease the dog days of January. Now we’re going to look at some of the other high school sports, boys swimming included.
So if you’re looking for something that doesn’t involve a basketball, please read on.
Trevian Relays
Boys swimming teams roll up a ton of points at the state meet with their relay finishes, and New Trier’s relay event on Saturday will offer a pretty good preview of who the top teams will be in six weeks at the Westmont Natatorium.
At last year’s Trevian Relays, Hinsdale Central edged New Trier by just four points. Stevenson, Waubonsie Valley, Loyola and Barrington rounded out the top six.
How close did that finish compare to the results from last season’s state meet? The top three were Hinsdale Central, New Trier and Waubonsie Valley, with Stevenson taking fifth.
Hawk Invitational
For a while we’ve been talking about the rapid growth of girls wrestling, especially in our area.
If you want proof of the increased popularity, head to Hoffman Estates today and Saturday. The Hawk Invitational will showcase many of the girls wrestlers who will be bringing home state medals at the end of next month.
It’s one-stop shopping for wrestling fans hoping to get a preview of the postseason. Among the area teams slated to compete are Bartlett, Burlington Central, Conant, Downers Grove South, Dundee-Crown, Fremd, Glenbard East, Glenbard South, Glenbard West, Grayslake Central, Grayslake North, Grant, Huntley, Larkin, Maine South, Montini, St. Viator, Schaumburg, West Chicago and Wheaton North.
Lake County Invite
Many eyes on Monday will be focused on Martin Luther King Jr. Day basketball events, but there’s also a pretty interesting girls gymnastics meet in Mundelein.
The Lake County Invite features the best teams from up north and serves as a warmup for the upcoming conference meets and the postseason.
Among the teams competing are Antioch, Barrington, Lake Zurich, Lakes, Libertyville, Mundelein, Stevenson, Vernon Hills and Warren. Vernon Hills was fifth in last season’s state meet while Lake Zurich was eighth.
Lake County Invite
No, we’re not repeating ourselves.
On Jan. 25, while boys wrestlers in the DuKane and Mid-Suburban League are vying for conference titles, the grapplers in Lake County will gather at Antioch High School for a massive invitational.
The nice thing about this event is it combines the top competitors from both the North Suburban Conference and the Northern Lake County Conference.
Among the teams in the invite are Carmel, Grant, Grayslake Central, Grayslake North, Lake Forest, Lake Zurich, Libertyville, Mundelein, Round Lake, Stevenson, Warren, Wauconda, Waukegan and Zion-Benton.
And with that, we’ll soon begin jumping into the postseason.
