Discover the science of steam engines and rainbows at Naper Settlement’s Family STEM Nights
Families with children, age 12 or younger, are invited to learn and create together at Naper Settlement’s new “Family STEM Nights.”
This monthly program allows family and friends to participate in fun, hands-on STEM experiments and activities exploring various topics and themes. Family STEM Nights kicks off on Feb. 6 from 6-7 p.m.
Family STEM Nights will include interactive learning explorations that help children increase their critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and curiosity.
The program will take place at the IDNR STEM Learning Lab inside the Mary and Richard Benck Family Agriculture Center.
The IDNR STEM Learning Lab has housed various STEM-based activities for museum visitors, students on field trips, and campers at the Camp Naper summer day camps since it opened in the spring of 2023.
“From discovering the science of farming to experimenting with rain-inspired activities, Family STEM Nights will offer unique and interactive learning opportunities for families with children ages 12 and under,” said Jessica Toran, director of learning experiences at Naper Settlement.
Winter/spring 2025 Family STEM Nights schedule:
• STEM in the 1860s (Feb. 6): Celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday by creating simple machines, exploring the telegraph, and learning the science behind steam engines.
• Over the Rainbow (March 6): Explore the science of light, color, and iridescence through hands-on, family friendly activities.
