Geneva theater students explore family bonds in 'Little Women’
The Geneva High School theater family is setting the stage to portray the story of the March family for this year’s winter showcase. The play, “Little Women,” is derived from Louisa May Alcott’s original novel.
It will be performed at 7 p.m. Thursday and Saturday, Feb. 6, and 8, in the high school auditorium, 416 McKinley Ave. Tickets are $10, $7 for students or seniors, or free for kids under age 6. For tickets, go to genevatheatreboosters.org.
Written in 1868 before becoming a stage play in 1912, “Little Women” follows the lives of the four March sisters as they navigate family, social expectations, and growth.
Geneva’s “Little Women” cast is full of talented actors who understand the weight of the story they’re telling and hold it dear to their hearts.
Tess Engerman, who plays the musically talented March sister Beth, feels the love and hope carried by a family-centered story, saying “these characters mean so much to me and to others.” She knows that a well-acted show will leave the audience feeling that meaning too and hopes to accomplish that by distilling her performance with the joy and peace her character has gifted her.
While the March sisters all grapple with their own identities and obligations, their story is told in a way that makes their familial connections clearly invaluable to them.
This focus on family makes “Little Women” a unique show, relying less on typical plot elements like a climax or an antagonist to propel the story, instead being driven by the March family’s experiences.
The mother of the March sisters is portrayed by junior Kaylee Skeens, and she says that by “focusing on the love of the family” the show encourages the audience to “really feel all the connections within the family.”
The “Little Women” cast features Geneva High School students of all grades, and the show has given these actors a great chance to grow and connect with their cast mates.
Freshman Isaac Eichelberger has enjoyed meeting new people and acting on stage in a way that helps him “grow to become a better actor.”
The cast has become a family of their own as they work to showcase the March family’s emotional narrative.
This touching story is the perfect addition to your February schedule, so be sure to catch Geneva High School’s production of “Little Woman” next weekend.
The cast looks forward to sharing their hard work with an audience and hopes that this show will leave your heart feeling anything but little!
