Our Saviour’s hosts Mozambique dinner Feb. 22

Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Naperville will host an interactive, all-ages Food Safari & Drum Experience dinner benefiting the church’s Mozambique Misson Saturday, Feb. 22.

The dinner will kick off at 6 p.m. at the church’s Celebration (south) Campus, at 919 S. Washington St.

Guests will enjoy a vibrant variety of items prepared by members of the church’s Mozambique Mission team who traveled to Our Saviour’s partner school in Chimoio, Mozambique, in 2023. An interactive drumming experience will be led by Shelley May Hutchison, one of Our Saviour’s choir directors.

The history of Our Saviour’s Mozambique Mission dates back more than 12 years, following the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mozambique’s founding of a school for students whose families were refugees from Zimbabwe. Because Zimbabwean students spoke English and Mozambique schools conducted classes in Portuguese, a language barrier prevented refugee students from being able to attend regular schools in their new home.

The Aka Power School for Zimbabwean refugees in Chimoio addressed that urgent need. While space for the school was provided by the local Lutheran church, the school receives no government funding; not for rent, for supplies or for teacher salaries.

“The missions of Our Saviour’s enable us, in different capacities, to be the hands and feet of God,” said Susan Ferguson, Mozambique Mission co-leader. “Our brothers and sisters in Chimoio, Mozambique, are true disciples of Christ, caring for the sick, feeding the hungry, bringing the gift of education … so that each person there knows that they are a loved and valued child of God.”

“Every dollar that’s donated to our Mozambique ministry in any way goes 100% to these health, nutrition and education initiatives that have and will continue to change lives,” Ferguson said.
