Fire leaves Des Plaines home uninhabitable, injures firefighter

A Des Plaines firefighter suffered a minor injury battling a fire Saturday night that left a home uninhabitable.

Firefighters responding to the blaze in the 2800 block of Scott Street at 8:23 p.m. discovered the fire in the kitchen area of the two-story, single-family home, fire officials said.

Crews had the fire extinguished at 8:45 p.m. and prevented its spread to other structures, according to the fire department.

There was no one home at the time of the fire, but the homeowner arrived on the scene shortly after crews began firefighting operations. There were no injuries reported other than those to the firefighter, who was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital for evaluation, officials said.

ComEd shut the power off to the structure, and it is now being boarded up. Red Cross was requested to the scene to help the homeowner with accommodations.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Des Plaines police and fire departments.
