Barbie exhibit at Gail Borden library showcases evolution of iconic doll
Dust off your leg warmers and get ready to boogie! “Barbie’s Superstar Era” exhibit will sparkle and dazzle visitors while it is on display from March 4-31 in the Elgin Room and lobby of Gail Borden Main Library in Elgin. There also will be Barbie programs for all ages.
This exhibit will feature hundreds of iconic Barbie collector’s dolls ranging from 1979 to the mid-1980s along with playsets that capture the societal shifts, fashion trends, and cultural movements of the time. In addition to collectors’ items, visitors will be able to step into the world of Barbie with larger-than-life photo ops, engaging dress-up opportunities, interactive elements and more.
The “Barbie Superstar Era” exhibit will feature trailblazing and representative dolls, including Black Barbie, Hispanic Barbie, and Great Shape Barbie.
“I can't wait to see this Barbie exhibit come to life at the library during Women's History Month,” said Karen Fox, Gail Borden Public Library District Foundation president. “Not only does it showcase the evolution of a beloved doll, but also the changing roles of women in society and the importance of representation.”
A selection of more modern pieces from the 2000s will also be on display.
Visitors are invited to share their Barbie stories or favorite Barbie doll as they take a nostalgic trip back to this pivotal pop culture moment that changed the roles of women, evolving fashion trends and the power of play. Send a brief video along with your name to photos@gailborden.info. Community stories will be added and played on a screen within the exhibit. Come back to check out what others had to share.
Don’t miss the chance to relive the magic of “Barbie’s Superstar Era” — the era that cemented Barbie's status as a cultural icon and explore the glamour, diversity, and creativity that continues to inspire generations of fans. This exhibit is sure to capture the beauty of the viewer and reinforce the idea to “Be anything you want to be.”
