Around 550 people, some wearing elaborate costumes and others wearing only swimsuits, jumped into icy waters during the Purple Plunge at Breezewald Park in Lake Zurich Saturday.

Held for the 12th year, the annual charity event raises funds for cancer patients and their families through sponsorships, entry fees, a raffle and a silent auction. A party both before and after the plunge was held in a massive tent across the street at Scoreboard Bar and Grill.

“We help families offset the cost of anything they need when they are fighting cancer so they can focus on healing and being with their families and loved ones,” said Purple Plunge President Paul Hunt.

Money going to families can be used for such needs as Uber rides, bus tickets, meals, car repairs and extra expenses incurred due to job loss or medical bills, so that cancer patients and their families don't have to worry, Hunt said. Since the event's inception, 470 families have been recipients of funds.

A half-dozen teams wore themed costumes while running into the lake. A costume contest held prior to the plunge was won by a group dressed as the “Founding Fathers” including the likes of George Washington, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson.

Ice was cleared from an area protected by ropes and buoys, and fire department members in wet suits were on hand for safety.
