Waukegan beats Guilford at buzzer

Carter Newsome hit a 10-foot baseline jumper at the buzzer, giving Waukegan a 59-57 victory over Rockford Guilford in the sectional semifinal at Waukegan on Wednesday.

It was a close call as to whether he got the shot off in time. The host Bulldogs had possession for the last shot, then got it back after a held ball with 2.2 seconds left. The first attempted inbounds pass was deflected out of bounds, leaving 0.9 seconds on the clock. Newsome caught the pass, turned, pump-faked and let it go.

Guilford's Jaden Webster hit a 3-pointer to tie the score with 35 seconds left. Guilford led at halftime 38-30, then Waukegan dominated the third quarter and took a 7-point lead into the fourth.

This sets up a highly-anticipated sectional final on Friday between Warren and Waukegan. The Bulldogs won both meetings during the regular season, while Warren won a regional final between these teams a year ago.

Xavi Granville led Waukegan with 24 points, Newsome scored 12, Adrian Serrano 10 and DJ Cole 7.
