Referendum is chance to remedy issues

As a teacher in Prospect Heights District 23 for twenty years, I can wholeheartedly say we are committed to helping students succeed and grow. Our schools perform above the state average in math and reading and all four are rated “Commendable.” However, overcrowding at Eisenhower School is making it harder for students to get the support they need. The upcoming referendum is an opportunity to fix these issues and ensure every child has the space and resources to learn and grow. The time is now to show families that their kids matter and that we are invested in their success.

One big change this referendum would bring is full-day kindergarten. Illinois has mandated that all districts in Illinois offer full-day kindergarten and it must be met by 2027. District 23 has no choice. We must build now. Moreover, research shows that kids in full-day programs do better in school, especially in reading, writing and math. That extra half-day will be instrumental in giving our children more resources to be successful. District 23 is the only school district in the area that does not offer it or has yet to pass a referendum to meet the state’s mandate. This plan would create six new classrooms and allow us to hire more teachers, which will set our students up for success by starting them off strong.

The referendum would also improve learning for all students. Reading specialists and therapists currently have to work in hallways or shared spaces, making it challenging for kids to focus. This plan would add 11 new student service offices and a better library. By voting YES on this referendum, we are investing in our children’s future and making sure they have every opportunity to succeed. Help us give them the best start possible.
