Endorsement: Tatooles for Inverness village president

In his 28 years as Inverness village president, John (Jack) Tatooles has led the town through some major changes.

Under his leadership, the village became a home rule community and later created its first police department in 2009, among other accomplishments. He cites the police force, with its emphasis on what he calls neighborhood-focused policing, as one of the greatest achievements of his long tenure, an addition that he credits with enhancing village safety after years of contracting with other communities and saving about $14 million over the years.

In addition, Tatooles, an attorney, points to the village’s AAA bond rating, lack of debt and healthy cash reserves as proof of his board’s financial stewardship. That’s especially important, he adds, in light of federal uncertainty, stock market swings and the potential loss of federal grants.

Tatooles has a strong record, one that includes greater communication with residents and a commitment to preserving Inverness’ serene, bucolic appeal.

He wants — and deserves — the chance to build on his legacy with an eighth term.

His opponent in the April 1 election, Benjamin Gottlieb, declined participation in endorsement interviews and did not respond to requests for information on his candidacy. That leaves voters wanting to do their homework at a tremendous disadvantage, and gives us pause as to how accessible and open Gottlieb would be if elected.

Tatooles is endorsed.
