White Sox will open season with Tauchman on injured list

Mike Tauchman's South Side debut will be delayed a few days.

White Sox general manager Chris Getz said Wednesday the former Cubs outfielder and Palatine native will open the season on the injured list with a right hamstring strain. Infielder Josh Rojas (toe fracture) and pitcher Tyler Gilbert will join him on the IL.

“We probably could have activated them on Opening Day, but there was no sense in pushing it,” Getz said of Tauchman and Rojas. “We want those injuries to be behind them.”

Here are a few other roster tidbits as the Sox prepare for Thursday's home opener against the Los Angeles Angels.

· Getz confirmed infielders Brooks Baldwin and Nick Maton, plus outfielder Travis Jankowski, will be on the opening roster. Baldwin and Jacob Amaya will likely share the shortstop position until Colson Montgomery is called up.

· The Sox claimed Greg Jones off waivers from Colorado and assigned him to Triple-A Charlotte. Jones, 27, is a former first-round pick who can play both shortstop and the outfield. He stole 46 bases in 86 games in Triple-A last year.

· The surprising move of the day was outfielder Oscar Colas being designated for assignment. Getz suggested the door isn't closed on Colas returning to the Sox if he clears waivers, but that's quite a drop for the organization's No. 2-ranked prospect in 2022 and '23.

Right-handed pitcher Justin Anderson, infielder Bobby Dalbec, infielder Tristan Gray, infielder Chase Meidroth, right-handed pitcher James Karinchak and right-handed pitcher Steven Wilson were also sent to Charlotte.
