Baseball: Schaumburg surges late to beat St. Viator
Visiting Schaumburg rallied from an early deficit to earn a 6-2 win in 6 innings over St. Viator Tuesday evening in Arlington Heights to move their record to 3-5 overall on the young campaign.
The Saxons used a blend of strong pitching and some late-run production.
"Going down 2-0 in the first inning we never wavered," Saxons coach Kevin Garvey said of his team's second straight win.
"That's the game of baseball. You've got to play a full (game). It's good to see our guys break through. We needed that one."
St. Viator (3-4) got on the board courtesy of junior second sacker Jonathan Tschanz's two-run homer in the bottom of the first for a 2-0 lead.
It then ran into a buzzsaw in the form of Schaumburg sophomore hurler Hayden Adamowicz who proceeded to keep the Lions at bay.
He fanned 11 while only allowing 3 more hits and a pair of walks after Tschanz's homer over 5 2/3 innings before running into his pitch count limit in the bottom of the sixth.
"I just went out there and did what I do best — just chuck and throw," Adamowicz said of his victorious effort.
"I wasn't wearing much under (my uniform). We're going to move forward from this."
With Adamowicz holding serve on the mound, the Saxons were able to even things at 2 in their half of the fifth. The runs came on a throwing error that brought in first baseman Jack Baker and an RBI single by senior right fielder Kile Gough that drove in Adamowicz's courtesy runner Shawn Kim.
That ended the afternoon for Lions hurler Jacob Oberwise who finished with 7 strikeouts, 5 hits and 2 walks in 4 2/3 innings.
It led to the decisive top of the sixth for Schaumburg as consecutive run-scoring hits from shortstop Lukas Cabay (single) and center fielder Matt Williams (double) plus a sacrifice fly RBI by Baker keyed a four-run outburst.
