American Legion Post 43 offers scholarships for college or trade school
Are you planning on attending college or trade school after graduation from high school in 2024 and could use some financial assistance? If so, Naperville American Legion Post 43 has some good news for you!
Every year, the Legion offers a chance to win one of three $3,000 scholarships to attend the college or trade school of your choice to help you fulfill your academic dreams and provide a foundation toward a successful and rewarding future. The scholarships will be awarded by May 23, 2025.
To be considered you must complete and email the required application information including an essay describing the responsibilities of a citizen in a democratic society by May 1, 2025.

Eligibility requirements
It is open to Illinois residents who are currently a senior at an accredited Illinois high school in the class of 2025 and any of the following:
• A child, stepchild, grandchild, or great-grandchild of a member of the American Legion Post 43, Chapter 43 Legion Riders, or Sons of the Legion Squadron 43.
• A member of Scout Troop 510 or Scout Troop 507.
• A Naperville American Legion Post 43 High School Oratorical Contest participant.
• A selectee to attend the 2024 Illinois Boys/Girls State under the sponsorship of Naperville American Legion Post 43.
• The child of a Naperville military veteran who, while a resident and on active duty, was killed or suffered a disability of 50% or more as determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
• America Legion Post 43 school award winners from Naperville junior high schools.
Applicants must include their high school transcript for academic achievement (GPA); and a letter to the board listing accomplishments in the following areas: leadership and participation in school and/or community activities; honors; community service; and patriotic involvement.
In addition, applicants must write an essay describing the responsibilities of citizenship in a democratic society. The essay shall be the original work of the student with appropriate footnotes to cite work. The essay shall not be longer than three typed pages, and must be formatted with 1-inch margins, 1.5 line spacing and 12-point font. The board will grade each essay based on grammar, spelling, originality, context, and content at a level consistent with exceptional high school work.

The decision of the scholarship committee judges is final, and all applicants will receive written notification that a decision has been reached. The winner will be notified by phone.
