Man convicted of Aurora gang-related murder

A man has been convicted of what authorities called a gang-related murder in Aurora, where he shot the driver of a car.

A Kane County jury on Friday convicted Rodolfo Madrigal of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

Madrigal, 45, of the 1400 block of East Main Street, Streator, has been in jail since his arrest in October 2023.

Prosecutors said that around 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 12, 2021, Madrigal shot 29-year-old Andrew Contreras to death and injured another man in his car. It happened near Route 31 and U.S. Route 30.

Madrigal was a passenger in a vehicle. He fired three to five shots at Contreras’ vehicle, authorities said.

Madrigal belonged to a gang, prosecutors said.

He faces a sentence of at least 71 years in prison.

At the time of the murder, Madrigal had been on probation in La Salle County for a 2022 case where he was charged with aggravated battery for shooting his brother.

His next court date is May 23.
