Softball notes: Benet’s Rosner no-hits Fenwick; South Elgin duo shines in the circle

Good pitching typically means positive results in the world of high school softball.

And South Elgin fits that bill perfectly. Coach Brad Reynard’s Storm (9-3, 4-0 UEC West) started the week with a team ERA of 0.71. Anna Kiel (2-3, 0.00 ERA, 11 hits in 22 innings, 33 K against 2 walks) and Jenna Sheehan (3-0, 0.54 ERA, 15 hits in 26 innings, 34 K, 2 walks) have been strong in the circle, while Chloe Ricard has been key behind the plate handling the pitchers and at the plate (.464, 5 doubles, 9 RBI), Reynard added.

Addison Trail update: Erin Parker (.571 hitting, 15 steals), Nina Matthews (1.278 OPS, .818 slug, 3 homers), Giuliana Clementi (3 homers), Marisa Lloveras (3 homers, 2.45 ERA pitching) and Emma Caniglia (strong defense in left field) lead the way for the Blazers (5-6 to start the week).

Aurora Central Catholic update: During a recent 6-game run, Morgan Vaghy (.444 hitting, 20 hits, 2 homers, 12 RBI) hit .533, while Kate Gambro (.333, 19 hits, 2 homers, 21 RBI) hit .500 — the two combining for 20 hits in those games for the Chargers (12-5, 4-2 Girls Catholic Athletic White). Corina Miller is 7-1 with 58 strikeouts and a 2.25 ERA, while Charlotte Brummel is 3-2 with a 1.45 ERA and is hitting .358 with 12 runs scored, a homer and 11 RBI. Jessica Pieckham is hitting .383 with 18 hits and 11 runs scored.

Benet Academy update: Sophie Rosner (.500 hitting, 8 RBI) and sister Alaina Rosner (.436, 8 RBI) are on fire at the plate, coach Janet Royal declared. Sophie Rosner also recently threw a no-hitter against Fenwick and has 43 strikeouts and a 1.74 ERA for the Redwings (4-7, 1-1 East Suburban Catholic). Alaina Rosner went 3-for-4 against Yorkville.

Downers Grove North update: Florida Atlantic commit Ashlynn Durkin has a 0.41 ERA in 17 innings of work with only 5 hits allowed and 41 strikeouts. Sam Lehnherr (.500, 2 triples), Mary Miller (.471, 4 RBI), Ella Morrell (.429, 4 RBI), Ella Bonk (.400, .526 on-base, 1 triple, 1 homer) and Vik Czech (.368, 5 RBI) also have been key for the Trojans (4-3).

Dundee-Crown update: Casi Attapit (.480 hitting, 12 hits) and Jordyn Jeffs (.458, 4 homers) are off to hot starts for the Chargers (4-5, 1-2 Fox Valley). Attapit also has been strong behind the plate, throwing out 2 runners trying to steal and picking another off a base.

Elgin update: Abby Mutolo is 24 innings away from catching 200 at the varsity level. Mutolo has not made an error this season and is hitting .571 for the Maroons (2-4, 1-2 UEC West). Coach Monica Stockman also has been pleased with Hailey Rea’s defense in the outfield, while Sofia Dekarske was lauded for stepping up in the circle for the first time as a varsity player after an injury to another player.

Fenton update: Sophomore Sophia Hollis (.556 hitting, 3 doubles), senior Lauren Koch (.643 on-base) and senior Izzy Delgado (6 RBI) have been strong offensively for the Bison (2-7, 1-2 UEC East). Hollis hit .615 during a recent 5-game span, while sophomore Kailey Bernero hit .300 during the same timeframe.

Glenbard East update: Lilly Carver (.571 hitting, 6 RBI), Ally Amrhein (.556, 3 doubles, 2 triples, 6 RBI) and Althea Fitzgerald (.389, 3 triples, 7 RBI) have provided the firepower at the plate for the Rams (5-1, 4-0 UEC East), while Claire Bolda (4-0, 0.00 ERA, 6 hits, 51 strikeouts) continues to excel in the circle, throwing a 5-inning perfect game against Glenbard South recently.

Glenbard North update: Senior shortstop standout Tru Medina is hitting .647 with 3 doubles, 5 homers and 14 RBI to go with 4 steals. She has a homer in each of North’s first 5 games, including a 2-run, game-ender in the bottom of the eighth against Benet. Senior left fielder Alyssa Aberhalden (.500 hitting, 6 runs, 4 RBI) and junior pitcher Avery Miller (4-0) also have been difference-makers, as has Kylee Sisco, who had a recent 3-game hitting streak and has been excellent at third base, coach Josh Sanew noted. North started the season 5-0.

Glenbard West: Alexa Trybus (.438 hitting. 2 doubles, 4 RBI), Ainslie Bobroff (.400, 4 homers, 9 RBI) and Megan Stieglitz (.368, 5 homers, 10 RBI) are off to fast starts at the plate for the Hilltoppers (4-2), while Ellie Adduci threw a no-hitter against Hoffman Estates and Olivia Salerno a 1-hitter against Willowbrook. Coach Mary McGrane also has been pleased with the progress of outfielder Shelby Bobroff (.357, 2 doubles, 4 walks) and versatile catcher-first baseman Cece Atkinson.

Hampshire update: Melissa Johnson (.600 hitting, 5 doubles, 1 homer) and Bria Riebel (1.000 slug, team-leader in RBI, strong defense) are excelling for the Whips (7-2, 1-0 FVC).

Huntley update: The Red Raiders (7-7, 2-2 Fox Valley) beat ICA No. 2 Metamora in a recent doubleheader. Coach Mark Petryniec’s squad has been powered of late by Aubrina Adamik (.419, 12 runs) and Gretchen Huber (1.93 ERA, 58 strikeouts).

IC Catholic Prep update: A recent 5-game ICCP winning streak included a key Girls Catholic Athletic White win over Aurora Central Catholic. Ari Zito leads the Knights (8-4, 3-0) in hitting with Kelly Cahill right behind her, while Lexi Russ leads in RBI. Maddy Dinino has excelled at the plate and in the circle, while Sofia Bucaro has played “amazing defense” in center field and leads the team in steals, coach Frank Reaber pointed out.

Jacobs update: Olivia Fillipp (.550 hitting) sets the tone at the top of the Golden Eagles’ lineup, while producing chaos on the bases. She helps set the table for Molly Hoch (.455, team-best 20 RBI). Jacobs started the week 7-4 and 0-1 in Fox Valley play.

Lake Park update: Ava Arenz (.500 hitting, 12 runs scored), Ari O’Connell (.459, 17 hits, 5 homers, 13 RBI) and Alex Kiefer (.382, 14 RBI) lead the way at the plate, while Gianna Furlano (6-1, 38 K in 37 1/3 innings) has been strong in the circle for the Lancers, who started 9-0 and lost recent games to Chicago Marist and Glenbard West.

Larkin update: Mackenzie Wemken (38 K in 31-plus innings, 17 called thirds), Mya Bermudez (.389 hitting) and Kaitlyn Neubert (.333, 9 RBI) have been bright spots for the Royals (3-5, 1-2 UEC West).

Metea Valley update: Charlie Benesh has been a dual threat for the Mustangs (3-9, 0-2 DuPage Valley), hitting .433 with 5 homers, 15 runs scored and 18 RBI and also has 69 strikeouts in 51 innings in the circle. Maielle Ernser is hitting .525 (21 hits, 5 doubles) with 12 runs scored and 7 RBI, while Grace Feeley is at .458 with 2 doubles, a homer, 13 runs scored and 9 RBI.

Neuqua Valley update: The Wildcats (4-6, 2-0 DuPage Valley) are led offensively by Nalia Clifford (.455 hitting, 3 doubles, 10 RBI, 5 RBI in win against Metea Valley), Krista Waldusky (.393, 9 RBI), Tegan Spellerberg (.357, 2 triples), Esha Argawal (.355) and Ashley Pape (.320, 2 triples).

St. Charles North update: Pitching depth with the likes of seniors Paige Murray (2 wins, 18 K in 19 innings), Lauren Seyller and Allison Francesconi, juniors Abby Zawadzki (Ole Miss pledge) and Carrigan Rich (South Dakota commit) and freshman Autumn Busleta has contributed to the North Stars’ 4-1 start. Ella Heimbuch (.563, 1 homer, 6 RBI), Murray (.500, 2 doubles) and Faith Maleski (.455, 5 RBI) are off to hot starts at the plate for North, which beat 2 Top-10 Indiana teams in Evansville recently.

Waubonsie Valley update: Waubonsie (4-4, 1-0 DuPage Valley), which erased a 7-0 deficit to beat Meta Valley recently, has received contributions from the likes of Aislee Morgan (.625 hitting, 3 doubles, 2 triples, 10 RBI), Dezirae Kelly (.385, 12 runs, 3 doubles), Grace Riggs (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 4 assists, 5 putouts against Metea) and Alyssa Tucker (7 RBI, strong defense in outfield and behind the plate, coach Val Wood pointed out).

West Aurora update: Sarah Tarr (.600 hitting, 3 homers, 8 RBI, 14 runs, 11 steals) and Gracie Del Toro (.393, 9 RBI, 9 runs, 6 steals) are contributing in multiple ways for the Blackhawks (6-4, 4-1 UEC West, 4-game win streak to start the week). Del Toro’s 2-out soft slap single in the seventh drove in the winning runs against Neuqua Valley. West started the week 23-for-23 in stolen-base attempts.

West Chicago update: The Wildcats (7-5 overall) were off to a 4-0 start in Upstate Eight East play. Jasmyn Trigueros has 57 strikeouts in 49 innings of work, while Sophia Ptak is hitting .457 with 4 homers, 14 runs scored and 9 RBI. Tessa Banasiak is hitting .357 with 3 homers and 16 RBI. Finn Gallagher has 5 RBI in her last 4 games, while Brielle Borner (8 walks, 7 runs) had 5 hits and scored 4 runs during that same span.

Westmont update: Freshman Gwyneth Jindra (.643 hitting, 1.786 slugging, 4 homers, 22 RBI, 12 runs), sophomore Grace Détente (.556 hitting, .733 on-base 10 runs) and junior Reagan Kelly (.385, 6 RBI, 7 runs, 5 steals) have been big for the Sentinels (3-2, 1-0 Chicago Prep).

Wheaton Academy update: The Warriors (1-4, 1-2 Chicagoland Christian) downed Chicago Christian 18-5 to record their first win. Tatiana Chavez (.500 hitting), Emma From (.417) and Reese Dryfhout (.417) are pacing the offense.

Wheaton North update: Reagan Crosthwaite is off to a torrid start (.485 hitting, 16 hits, 6 homers, 20 RBI, 18 runs scored) for the 9-2 Falcons, as is leadoff hitter Makayla Grantz (.382, 13 hits, 5 RBI, 8 walks). Both also were cited for excellent defense by coach Allie Ravanesi.

Wheaton Warrenville South update: Senior pitcher Presley Wright (5-1, 50 K, 41 innings, 1.71 ERA, 400 hitting), freshman Lilly Bobor (.393, 3 doubles, 3 triples, 8 RBI), senior Abby Mease (.385, 7 steals), junior shortstop and cleanup hitter Becca Chaney (.357, 2 doubles, 6 RBI), junior catcher Allison Hubsky (.375, 5 RBI, consistent behind the plate, coach Jeff Pawlak noted), junior Nelia Kirichun (.429) and junior Caroline Schulz (.375) have been notable for the Tigers (6-2).

York update: The 9-4 Dukes have been bolstered at the plate by the junior tandem of Gia Valentin (.522 hitting, 3 homers), Lilly Burda (.489, 22 hits, 3 homers, 13 RBI) and Maggie Demopoulos (16 hits, 3 homers, strong defense at second). Tufts University-bound Avery Kanouse has fanned 60 batters and also is hitting .306 (11 hits), while sophomore catcher Milo Folsom is hitting .306 (11 hits) from the left side of the plate.
