Illinois needs to support AI

Today’s job market is unpredictable, but one thing is clear: AI is transforming how Chicago-area companies hire and how local candidates get hired.

As the owner of The Talent Maven and someone who’s spent more than two decades in talent acquisition, I’ve seen firsthand how artificial intelligence is changing the game for the better. From sourcing and screening to interviewing and onboarding, AI is helping companies move faster, smarter, and — when used thoughtfully — more equitably.

Tools like automated resume screening, AI-powered job matching and virtual assessments save valuable time while identifying qualified candidates that may otherwise be overlooked. For small business owners, this is a game changer. They need to build strong teams but often don’t have the time or resources for lengthy hiring cycles.

On the flip side, jobseekers are benefiting, too. AI tools can help candidates clarify their strengths, tailor their resumes and prepare for interviews — skills that aren't always taught in school but are critical in today’s competitive market.

But Illinois is at risk of falling behind.

Right now, there is a piece of legislation, HB 3605, that could impose strict reporting burdens on startups and small businesses developing AI solutions. These regulations would slow innovation and make it harder for Illinois startups to compete.

Illinois should be encouraging thoughtful innovation — not blocking it.

AI is not a threat to talent acquisition, it’s a tool. When applied responsibly, it can make hiring better for everyone. I hope lawmakers take the time to understand the value this technology brings and craft policies that support innovation, small businesses and jobseekers across our state.
