Support for Trump on tariffs
I dislike Trump, but am going to voice some possible support.
Through most of it's history, the US had tariffs to protect American businesses and jobs. In 1992, Ross Perot ran as a very strong independent presidential candidate. He said that passing NAFTA (which removed tariffs between Canada, Mexico, and the US) would cause a strong sucking of jobs out of the US. It was passed and Perot was right. Then a similar deal was made with China and Europe which had the same effect. We were told that those deals would improve things by increasing international trade, but things worsened in many ways. It was natural to expect other countries to take advantage of the US and a lot of damage has been done. Many jobs have been lost to countries where people earn about a dollar a day.
Trump is trying to get things back to the way that they were before those deals were made and there were many more jobs. Of course it will cause a trade war. Any type of war causes a period of hardship. Just consider the hardships that people endured during WWII. It will take time to undo all the damage that has been done to the US over the last 30 years, but in the long run things should improve.
Trump may be doing things in an extreme and dangerously dictatorial manner, but Congress has been a muddled mess for way too long. Congress cannot be relied upon to solve our problems.
There are things that I disagree with Trump about, but I will not address those matters right now.
