Aurora woman gets 12-year sentence in deadly Naperville shooting
An Aurora woman once accused of murder in the death of a man killed during a gun deal gone bad in Naperville has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to a lesser charge.
Desire J. Gray, 22, of Aurora admitted guilt in August 2023, to aggravated battery stemming from fatal shooting and was sentenced Wednesday.
She and Robert Chatman-Jones, 24, of Bellwood were charged with the murder of Coreon Davis, 18, in August 2021. Police at the time said David was killed during a dispute over a gun sale in the 600 block of Amersale Drive.
Authorities at the time said Chatman-Jones arranged to meet with Davis to buy a black semiautomatic gun for $500. When Davis arrived at the meeting location, Chatman-Jones approached and gave him an amount of money that Davis claimed was less than the agreed upon sale price.
A struggle broke out, and Davis was shot twice, including in the head. He later died at a hospital.
Gray went to the scene with Chatman-Jones and fled with him after the shooting, authorities said. As part of her plea agreement, charges of first-degree murder and robbery were dropped.
Chatman-Jones is arguing he acted in self-defense. His next court date is April 29.
According to DuPage County court records, Chatman-Jones has filed a request asking to introduce evidence that the victim had a record of being violent and aggressive.
Gray will have to serve 85% of her sentence before being eligible for release. She received 1,331 days credit for time she has spent in the DuPage County jail since her arrest.
