Boys track and field: Barrington edges Glenbrook North for title at Lake Zurich

The 15-team 2025 Bear Invitational was a great opportunity for area boys track and field teams to showcase their skills Thursday night at Lake Zurich.

Barrington won the combined varsity/freshmen-sophomore team title with 155.5 points to outdistance Glenbrook North (146.5 points) in second place. Antioch took third place with 127 points while Huntley (120.5) took fourth.

The Broncos got first-places from Adam Lyon (50.03 seconds) in the 400-meter run, Owen Fors (15.63 meters) in the shot put, and Hayden Dahlin (4.31 meters) in the pole vault. Elite distance runner Joe Bregenzer did not compete for Barrington.

"We've got Palatine Distance Night on Saturday so a lot of the top distance kids are kind of waiting for that," said Barrington coach Todd Kuklinski. "We love coming to this track, it's a fast track. Hayden (Dahlin) and Vince (Choukas) going 1-2 in the pole vault, and Owen Fors winning the shot put was a good night overall."

The host Bears' 4x800 team of Cameron Libby, Luke Marshall, Edwin Galarza, and Karanveer Patil started the meet with a winning time of 8:09.25. Lake Zurich's Connor Strauss (6.60 meters) won the long jump (6.60 meters), and the triple jump (13.80 meters).

"Connor won two events which is outstanding for him after going to state last year in the triple jump," said Lake Zurich coach Todd Anderson. "Nick Gast (10.85 seconds) broke our school record in the 100-meter dash, and our 4x800 team looked solid so I'm super excited about them."

Barrington's 4x100 squad of Hayden Dahlin, Lucas Marin, David Marian, and Lamer Osterhues placed first in 42.40 to nip Antioch by .03 seconds. The Sequoits got a first-place finishes from Brandon Marks 110 and 300-meter hurdles.

"Brandon set a meet record and school record in the 300, and he was on the 4x100 team that broke our school record," said Antioch coach Chris Bailey. "Roderick Rathmann took third in the discus, and he was a state qualifier in the discus last year."

Dundee-Crown's Oreoluwa Sobodu posted a personal and meet-record time of 10.77 seconds to win the 100-meter dash followed closely by Huntley's Vince Costa (10.80), Osterhues (10.81), and Maine South's Sean Schermerhorn (10.84). Schermerhorn (22.03) won the 200-meter dash.

"That was a good time (10.77), but that is probably like the worst 10.77 in history because my blocks were horrible and I stumbled at the start," said Sobodu. "I'm hoping to go downstate in the 100 and the 200, and I'm just going to keep pushing."

Huntley's Tommy Nitz set the meet record in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.52 while teammate Andrew Raistrick (4:29.78) won the 1,600.

"I was really pleased with the way our kids performed tonight, and our kids really responded well to the meet being moved up by a day," said Huntley coach Chris Maxedon. "Tommy (Nitz) ran an outdoor PR for him in the 800 and Raistrick led the 1,600 from wire to wire."

The Red Raiders' 4x200 team of Costa, Dominic Giuseffi, Jordan Oruche, and Zach Rysavy won in 1:29.99. Dundee-Crown's Anthony Jobe (6-feet, 2 inches) was the high jump champion while Lakes' Jordan Phelan (49.22 meters) won the discus throw.
