Buffalo Grove man held on weapons charges after firing gun

A 61-year-old Buffalo Grove man is being held on weapons charges after a gun reportedly was fired at the Chevy Chase Apartments and police found weapons and ammunition in his possession, authorities said.

Kevin Smith, a resident of the complex, is being held pending a pre-trial detention hearing set for Friday afternoon in Waukegan. He is charged with aggravated assault, unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and reckless discharge of a firearm.

Buffalo Grove police took Smith into custody early Thursday morning. He first appeared in court that afternoon, when police asked to retain the recovered firearms and ammunition for safekeeping.

Police responded to the Chevy Chase Apartments on the 1300 block of Johnson Drive at about 12:14 a.m. for an initial report of an armed robbery but later was classified as a man with a gun call.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with a witness who reported hearing a gunshot before being confronted by a man armed with a shotgun. The man ordered entry into the building and then left the witness behind, police said.

Police said officers found a spent shotgun shell outside the address.

After receiving a description of the man from the witness, officers searched the apartment building. They identified the suspect as Smith, who lives at the address, police said.

Police said they contacted Smith, who fled on foot but was apprehended nearby and taken into custody a short time after.

Police said they found several weapons and ammunition, including a shotgun, in Smith’s possession, all of which were recovered.

No injuries or property damage were reported.
