Man pleads guilty to killing Naperville bicyclist while driving drunk

A Woodridge man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing a bicyclist in 2023 while driving drunk.

Salil Chander, 35, of the 4100 block of Nelson Court, pleaded guilty but mentally ill Monday to one count of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol — resulting in death.

Authorities said that around 5:05 p.m. Aug. 6, 2023, police responded to the 4100 block of Nelson for a report of a drunken man with a sword walking around in a house. The caller told them Chander had left the home in a silver Kia.

About a minute later, he hit a light pole on Nelson, drove west on Green Trails Drive, veered into the oncoming lane and hit bicyclist Michael Norton, 64, of Naperville.

Chander drove away; police found him at Green Trails and Ridgewood Road in Lisle. He had a blood alcohol content of 0.222 percent, more than twice the legal standard for intoxication.

Chander has to serve 85% of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
