Not just feel-good issue

The theory behind mascot and school team name changes was/is to show proper treatment of so-called disadvantaged groups. Many names were downright offensive, while others were simply the use of a proper noun. One could argue either way with Chief Illini, but Atlanta Braves’ “Chief knock a Homa” stretched that becoming an inane caricature. Some teams even after the change retained the “Tomahawk Chop” and its accompanying chant. Chicago Blackhawks honor its namesake Chief Blackhawk; no pounding drums or cartoonish hoopla. Simply an artistic reproduction of the proud Chief, guardian of the Rock River.

I will agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Schmidt that too much time is spent on feel-good legislation while important matters, really tough complicated things are ignored; at all levels of government, some more than others.
