Elk Grove Village Clerk Lorrie Murphy dies at 63
Elk Grove Village Clerk Lorrie Murphy — a village employee for more than two decades — has died after a long illness.
Murphy, who also served as Mayor Craig Johnson’s executive assistant, was remembered at a village board meeting Tuesday night. Her June 6 passing at 63 years old was first announced in an obituary published June 13 in the Daily Herald.
“She’s done a phenomenal job on behalf of this community, and she’s going to be missed,” Johnson said. “Lorrie was a dear employee and a dear friend of all of ours.”
Murphy was the clerk — calling the roll at meetings, keeping official records and helping coordinate local elections — since 2017. She spent the previous five years as an executive secretary in the village manager’s office, and was hired as a senior clerk in 2005.
Murphy is survived by her husband of 41 years and two children. Private funeral services and interment have been held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance are being accepted, according to her death notice from Grove Memorial Chapel.
Jen Mahon, who had been deputy clerk, was appointed by Johnson and confirmed by the village board Tuesday as the new clerk. After her swearing in, Mahon said she had “big shoes to fill” and looked forward to serving the community in which she lives and works.
