Pohl needs help in Olympic bid; DeFrancesca honored

The pursuit of the Olympic dream continues, but it needs your help.

Shannon Pohl (Prospect) is the No. 2 badminton singles player in America.

Only one player from each country goes to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Pohl is currently living and training full time in Denmark at the International Badminton Academy. She received a grant from the William E. Simon Olympic Endowment for the Support of Athletes in financial need.

The final push for the 2008 Olympics is on, and the costly qualification process involves competing in over 30 international tournaments.

Although her sponsorship money has been depleted, Pohl hopes to continue her Olympic dream after 13 years of dedication to the sport.

Corporate as well as individual sponsors of any size would be welcome.

Checks can be made out to Shannon Pohl and sent along with any corporate sponsor ideas to 417 S. Banbury Rd., Arlington Heights, IL, 60005. She also can be sponsored through her Web site at www.shannonpohl.com.

Hockey

Jeff DeFrancesca (Prospect) of the University of Wisconsin-Stout is one of eight finalists for the Hockey Humanitarian Award, presented by BNY Mellon Wealth Management.

The award is presented to college hockey's finest citizen, male or female, who competes with both intensity and civility, respecting the rules of the game on and off the ice, and gives back to the community to enrich both their own lives and those to whom they reach out.

"He has been involved in 20-plus activities here in town, on campus or in his community," said DeFrancesca's head coach Terry Watkins. "Raising money for cancer, raising money for kids without parents, helping causes dealing with violence against women, kids with learning disabilities -- it's just one thing after another he is involved in.

"It's unbelievable what this kid does."

Each finalist will be interviewed by a selection committee, and the winner will be named at the NCAA Division I Frozen Four on Friday, April 11 at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo.
