Halloween storytelling event at library

Halloween events continue to be all the rage around Schaumburg, including tonight at the Schaumburg Township District Library.

"Ghoulish Ghost Stories," an evening of interactive storytelling for patrons 6 and up, will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today in the Rasmussen Room of the library at 130 S. Roselle Road.

There is no fee for this event, but seating is limited. Free tickets will be available in the Youth Services area on the first floor from 20 minutes before the event.

The library is also hosting a couple of other Halloween activities for kids this month.

Chef Rose Deneen will show how to make edible haunted houses in the "Parent and Child Haunted Houses" program from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and again from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Youth Services Craft Room. Children 6 to 14 and a parent or guardian will decorate a graham cracker house with icing, sprinkles, candy and other treats.

No siblings may participate, and there must be one adult per child. Registration is required and there's a $10 fee. Call (847) 923-3439.

Kids 6 to 14 are also invited to play "Halloween Jingo," a Bingo-style game with a Halloween theme, from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Youth Services Craft Room. Prizes will be awarded to winners, and no registration or fee is required.

Halloween Boonanza for kids:

On Halloween itself, Oct. 31, the Schaumburg Park District is offering either an alternative to trick-or-treating, or something to do after the door-to-door hunt for candy is over.

The Halloween Boonanza festival is for all kids 1 to 14 years old and runs from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Community Recreation Center at 505 N. Springinsguth Road and neighboring Ken Allen Safety Park.

"This is a very family-friendly event," said Special Events Supervisor Gwen Strombeck. "We'll have carnival games, jugglers, face-painters and more. One of the great features about this event is that it's very inexpensive."

Other activities include hay rides, prizes, candy, crafts, trick-or-treating in Safety Park, games, entertainment, a moonwalk and mad science room.

The preregistration deadline is 5 p.m. Oct. 30 by calling (847) 490-7015 or visiting parkfun.com. The fee is $5 in advance and $7 on the day of the event. Parents and kids younger than 1 are free.

Connecting generations:

Senior citizens of Schaumburg Township and surrounding communities are being invited to an open house for Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54's Connecting Generations Volunteer Program at 7 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Schaumburg Township District Library.

The goal is to identify the gifts and talents of seniors in the community and match them to the needs of local students and schools. Volunteers can specify the times they're available and may select a particular school within the district.

Refreshments will be served and information will be available. For more information, contact the school district office at (847) 357-5047 or email SamBurgdorff@sd54.org.
