Barrington Lions host free eye screens

The Barrington Lions Club will host a free diabetic retinopathy/macular degeneration eye screening, 9 a.m.-noon, on Friday, Sept. 4, at the Barrington Public Library, 505 N. Northwest Hwy.

The screening is for anyone who has diabetes, a family history of diabetes or is 55 years or older. Part of the screening will include a photo of the interior of the eye. A review of the photo will be performed by a retina specialist. Results of the review will be mailed to the participant.

If you have blurred vision, double vision, darkened or reduced vision, these symptoms could indicate diabetic retinopathy or one of the complications from it. Contact Glenn Engelhardt, at (847) 381-2070 for information.

Job center opens at Schaumburg library

Anyone looking for a job or considering a career change can benefit from the new Job and Career Center at the Schaumburg Township District Library, 130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg.

Located on the second floor adjacent to the Reference Desk, the center has a computer reserved just for job seekers, with links to job search sites and other computer-related resources, including DVDs.

Career and salary data, company information and details on various types of jobs is available in the books, guides and other materials.

Schaumburg Dems hold voter drive

The Schaumburg Area Democrats will conduct a voter-registration drive 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29 at the Barrington Lakes Apartments clubhouse, 2200 Hassell Road, Hoffman Estates.

Any Illinois resident who will be 18 years old by the next election is eligible. Bring two pieces of identification, such as an Illinois drivers license, Illinois State ID, Social Security card, valid passport, student or employee ID, birth certificate, utility bill or other mail postmarked to the applicant.

DAR history contest open for 2009-10

The Twenty-first Star Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution has opened its annual American History Essay Contest for 2009-10.

All public, private or home-schooled students in 5th-8th grades are eligible. The contest is conducted without regard to race, religion, sex, or national origin.

The 2009-2010 topic is the completion of the first transcontinental railroad. One essay at each grade level is selected as the chapter winner and forwarded to the State American History chairman for state competition.

Deadline for submission is Dec. 1. Interested students must contact Nancy Meyer for the specific guidelines for this year's contest, (847) 824-1150.
