Sample great music, food at Celebration 2008

You can enjoy great music and a variety of tasty foods while helping promote the arts in Schaumburg next weekend.

Celebration 2008, a benefit for the Prairie Center for the Arts, will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 at the center, 201 Schaumburg Court.

Performing simultaneously on four different stages will be Banda Rika, the Gina Knight Quartet, Patchouli and Heather Moran.

Gourmet specialties will be served up by Schaumburg's leading restaurants, including Bonefish Grill, Chandler's, Davis Street Fishmarket, Pete Miller's, Entourage, Wildfire, John Barleycorn, Moretti's, Sam & Harry's, Ram and Ted's Montana Grill.

Admission is $50 in advance or $55 at the door. There's a 10 percent discount for groups of eight or more.

Children's author to appear:

Children's author and illustrator Patricia Polacco will speak from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25 in the Rasmussen Room of the Schaumburg Township District Library at 130 S. Roselle Road in Schaumburg.

Polacco has published numerous books for kids, including last year's "The Lemonade Club" and "Ginger and Petunia." In August, her book "For the Love of Autumn" hit bookstores, and will be followed in November by "Someone for Mr. Sussman."

Polacco's books are primarily geared to the 4-to-8 and 9-to-12 age groups, and several will be available for purchase and autographing after her presentation.

She's received numerous awards for her books, and her Web site includes ideas for teachers as well as fun activities and videos for children. Visit patriciapolacco.com for more on her.

Silver Games launched today:

Schaumburg Park District and Friendship Village have joined forces to present the inaugural Silver Games, featuring two days of competition for seniors age 62 and over today and Saturday.

The Silver Games will consist of 16 separate events, including swimming, trivia, horseshoes, bowling, a card tournament, table tennis, putting and more.

Today's competition takes place at Friendship Village, 350 W. Schaumburg Road. There will be an opening ceremony at 8 a.m. and the day will conclude at 5 p.m. with a fish fry and karaoke jam.

Saturday, the action moves to the Sport Center at 1141 W. Irving Park Road. Play starts at 8 a.m. with the final event to begin at 1 p.m.

Cost for the two-day Silver Games is just $10, which includes continental breakfast on both days, a T-shirt and goody bag. Awards will be given to the winners in each event.
