Briefs: Arrests in car burglaries

Three cars were broken into at about 10:30 p.m. on Sunday near Central Road and Arthur Avenue in Arlington Heights, according to police. Two Des Plaines men - Gerardo Ayala-Cervantes, 18, and Leaveil James Pittman, 18 - were spotted in the area and charged with three counts of burglary, police said. The men targeted the three cars because they had GPS mounts on their dashboards, according to police.

Seven injured in accident

Seven people were taken to four hospitals following an accident Monday morning at Algonquin and River roads in Des Plaines, Fire Chief Randy Jaeger said. Only one of the injuries appeared serious, he said. Two people each were taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Resurrection Hospital in Chicago, Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, and one was taken to Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview. The accident was one of more than 10 reported Monday due to icy conditions, Jaeger said.

Arlington Hts. OKs levy

The Arlington Heights village board approved a 0.32 percent levy increase with a 5-3 vote on Monday. Because of pension commitments, the village will actually collect $165,000 less for general purposes than in 2009. The levy increase will have the owner of a $340,000 home pay $3 more in village taxes. Village President Arlene Mulder and Trustees John Scaletta, Norm Breyer and Joe Farwell voted in favor of the levy. Trustees Tom Hayes and Bert Rosenberg said the levy wasn't enough to cover village expenses and voted against it. Trustee Tom Stengren wanted a zero percent levy increase and also voted against the proposal. Trustee Virginia Kucera was absent. The village is operating on a May 1, 2009, to April 30, 2010, fiscal year budget. Every December, the village sets its tax levy, which is the amount of money the village can raise through the property tax. In March the board will discuss how that levy money is spent.

Palatine OKs office building:

The Palatine Village Council on Monday unanimously approved plans for an office condominium building at 800 E. Northwest Hwy. near Rohlwing Road. The proposed 12,200-square-foot building will be located on the same site as the 10-story Harris Bank building, Twin Lakes office complex and Cotillion banquet facility. It will be marketed to medical and professional offices, the developer said. Officials gave the go-ahead despite concerns of a parking shortage.

Help with farmers market

The village of Buffalo Grove is asking for volunteers as it plans for a farmers market next summer. The village staff agreed that the market should be moved from the proposed location on Route 83 to the public works park lot at Raupp Boulevard and Lake-Cook Road because of higher visibility. The village is looking to partner with Bensidoun USA, which handles several other markets in the area. Residents interested in assisting with applications or the coordination of the farmers market should contact the village manager's office at (847) 459-2518. The village also is looking for businesses willing to sponsor the market.
