Paintbox Cookies
1 1/2 cups sifted confectioners' sugar
1 cup butter
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
Egg Yolk Paint
1 egg yolk
1/4 teaspoon water
Food coloring
For the cookies: In a large bowl, cream sugar and butter. Mix in egg, vanilla and almond extract.
In a separate bowl, stir the flour, baking soda and cream of tartar. Add to the butter mixture and stir to combine well. Refrigerate dough 2 to 3 hours.
For the paint: In a small bowl, stir egg yolk and water. Add food coloring until you get desired tint. For additional colors, mix additional batches of yolk and water.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Roll dough out to 1/4-inch thickness on floured board. Cut with cookie cutters. Paint designs on with egg yolk paint. Bake 7 to 8 minutes.
Makes five dozen, depending on size of cookies.
