U-46 plans to increase lunch prices by a dime

Elgin Area School District U-46 plans to increase lunch prices by a dime to $2.10 for the upcoming school year.

The rising cost of fuel drove the increase, according to the district.

Breakfast prices will remain at $1.25.

U-46 parents or guardians whose income qualifies their children for free or reduced lunch should complete the form sent to all homes and return it to their children's school.

Parents should fill out just one form for all of their children who attend a U-46 school.

According to federal guidelines, a family of four with an annual household income of $26,845 qualifies for free lunch.

A family of four with an annual household income of $38,203 or less qualifies for reduced-price meals.

Additional copies of the application form are available at the principal's office in each school or by visiting the Food and Nutrition Services Office located at 355 E. Chicago St. in Elgin.

U-46 last increased lunch prices in July 2006, when the school board approved a 15 cent increase for elementary school lunches and a 5 cent increase for high school lunches.
