Bank robber apprehended in Mt. Prospect

Mount Prospect police this morning captured a local resident, who they say robbed a bank in town.

Police said a Mount Prospect man took an undisclosed amount of money from the First Bank, 2100 S. Elmhurst Road. Police did not say whether there was a weapon involved or how the robber was able to steal the money.

After the robbery, the man was last seen heading south of the bank, riding a bicycle and wearing khaki cargo pants and a dark fleece top.

While canvassing the area, police found a witness, who reported that the robber may have come into their business to use a phone.

Police checked the last number called from the business and it was listed to a store located several blocks away.

While officers continued to search the area, unmarked police units set up surveillance around the store.

At 11:57 a.m., a person matching the offender's description entered the store's parking lot on foot.

He was held at the scene where he was positively identified as the offender by bank employees.

The man was turned over to the FBI for federal prosecution, police said.
