Rolling Meadows High giving homecoming a little Hollywood glitz

Rolling Meadows High School is rolling out the red carpet for next week's homecoming events.

With a Hollywood theme, myriad events are planned, from Sunday's "lock-in" to the homecoming dance Oct. 13.

Nichole Anderson, faculty adviser to the student council, says a crew of up to 50 students has helped put together an exciting week.

She especially encourages the community to attend the Thursday night events. A parade starts at 6 p.m. at the school, goes north on Jay Lane, west on Grouse Lane, north on Pheasant Drive, east on Thrush Lane, south on Meadow Drive and back to Central Road to the stadium.

There, around 7 p.m., a pep rally will showcase dance and cheer squads, the newly crowned royalty and a fireworks display. The event is free.

On Friday, the undefeated Mustangs face Buffalo Grove with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Great halftime entertainment is planned, so bring the family. In fact, let's set a record for attendance at this one.

79 shopping days until Christmas: OK, we're often appalled when red and green decorations go up before Oct. 1. But it's not too early to think about the holidays. Oct. 1 was the official start of Palatine Township's Adopt-a-Family program. Last year, more than 500 low-income families received gifts and food because of the generosity of the community. It's easy to participate -- especially if you make it a group effort. Adopt a family with your work peers or church organization. Our own copy desk at the Daily Herald is signing up to help a family this year. Visit www.palatinetownship.com or call (847) 358-6700 for more information.

Get organized: If chaos too often rules your life, check in for some organization therapy at the Rolling Meadows library.

Professional organizer Beth Randall makes it her business to help people get and stay organized. She'll be speaking at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Randall, a mother of three who lives near Plainfield, is certified through the National Association of Professional Organizers. (Did you know such a group existed?) Since forming her business, Joe Organizer, in 2003, she has helped clients straighten out closets, garages, bedrooms, kitchens, pantries, basements and home offices.

Randall's focus at the library seminar will be paper management, kitchens and closet organizing. We know we all need it.

Public works showcase:: The Rolling Meadows public works department invites you to its open house Saturday. Get updated on the city's street, water and forestry operations, and learn how rain gardens can help with drainage on your property. Drop by the facility at 3900 Berdnick St. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If the valuable information there doesn't lure you, maybe the complimentary snacks will! Call (847) 963-0500.
